Among the most popular breeds in the feline world, the Persian cat certainly occupies a place of honor due to its very particular appearance, essentially the work of man. Yet, despite having very specific characteristics, there may still be some confusion with other breeds. In this article we will shed some light on this situation and tell you how to recognize easily a Persian cat.

  • Muzzle: the flattened snout (see photo above), the result of several crosses made by man over time, has somewhat become the trademark of this breed despite the fact that it can cause respiratory problems in the specimens that have it. However, not all Persians have this feature: some have a more rounded snout and a slightly more protruding nose, which softens their appearance (hence the nickname doll face).
  • MantlePersians have a soft and silky medium-long coat that they have some difficulty keeping clean, which is why they need their humans to take care of their hair every day and accurately. In addition to white, it can also be blue, black, cream, brown and orange in various combinations (two for males, even three for females).
  • Tail: short and hairy, usually slightly curved upwards.
  • body size: specimens of this breed are often more robust than other cats, but they know how to move without any apparent difficulty despite their heavy bones. The body and neck are generally short and stocky. The weight varies between 3, 5 and 7 kg.

Many people say that the Persian is an "aristocratic" cat who is absolutely aware of its beautiful appearance: this can be deduced from its temperament docile and silent, and from the fact that he will prefer to perch for hours on the sofa rather than going out to play; it is also difficult for him to explore the highest places in the house. However, it is a cat extremely affectionate, which does not demand too much attention but loves to receive it very much and therefore makes an excellent companion animal.
