A new law, which came into force on January 1, 2019, regulates that, in the state of California, cats and pets can only be sold in stores if they come from shelters or non-profit associations.

Many times we have reiterated the concept of the importance of giving a family to stray cats and dogs. Today, many prefer the company of a purebred cat or dog. Above all this is determined by the possibility of choosing your cat or dog according to the breed, color and size.

So very often, speaking in this case of cats, there are many who they remain in the shelters and are not adopted. Sure, the cat taken from a shelter may have a difficult and traumatic past which may have inevitably marked his social behavior and approach and may have some illnesses due to the years spent on the street.

On the other hand, however, if you buy a purebred cat, if legally certified (so it owns the pedigree), you shouldn't run into unpleasant issues and unknown at the time of purchase.

Unpleasant acts they happen, however, when you buy cats from phantom breeders, which however do not provide any kind of pedigree. Unfortunately, this phenomenon is increasingly rampant.

But, surely there are many testimonies of people who have taken cats inside some shelter or association and have been bewitched by it. In fact, a indissoluble relationship and affection, albeit perhaps, at the beginning there were difficulty.

We know well, however, that affection, tenacity and a lot of love can do overcome barriers and the obstacles that stand between a cat and its owner.

To greatly reduce the problem of stray dogs and the ever higher overcrowding of refugeesi, the state of the California, from 1 January 2019, has passed a new law.

This law prohibits the sale of pets, cats and all other pets considered in pet shops, unless they come from shelters or associations.

Most Californians have declared themselves enthusiastic of this law basically for two reasons.

The first reason is that there is one greater protection of animals and thus the increasingly rampant trafficking of animals would be avoided. The second reason, linked more to the economic sphere, mainly concerns taxes that Californian citizens are obliged to pay to support the costs of sterilization of strays (250 million dollars in the last year).

The law states that only cats, dogs and other pets, which come from shelters or from associations and non-profit organizations, can be sold in pet shops.

The shops are then obliged to keep the data relating to the animal on its origin and hang the same on fences or cages by means of a sign.

If this data were not present, the shopkeeper risks one fine of 500 dollars. Purebred cats or dogs can only be purchased from certified breeders that issue the pedigree.

A law that therefore allows respect for many abandoned animals and the reduction of illegal trafficking of purebred puppies, which very often are sold at exorbitant prices and which then turn out to be sick.

We hope that greater awareness will also arrive in Italy and that many cats and pets, housed in shelters, will soon find a family with which to spend the rest of their lives.

Fundamental is the bond that is established between us and the cat. An indissoluble bond!
