Last minute news is the discovery of six specimens of the bengal cat, on a farm in Silandro, a town in the province of Bolzano. A 34 year old man was reported, after reports, by the Public Prosecutor of Bolzano, per illegal and unauthorized sale of this species.

The man had 2 adults and 4 Bengal cat kittens without documentation which, fortunately, thanks to the collaboration of the Carabinieri of Bolzano and the staff of the Veterinary Service, are in good condition, but do not have microchips. The man was denounced because he raised this particular breed of cat without any health and administrative authorization and because the specimens were certainly destined for the clandestine trafficking. This hypothesis is still under investigation, as well as the purity and real origin of these felines. The Bengal cat is still a very rare breed of cat and the cost of a single cat can reach over 2000 euros with a pedigree. The six specimens, for the moment, have been entrusted to the “Sill” animal health shelter in Bolzano.

Unfortunately, the illegal trafficking of rare cats is increasingly rampant. Be wary of all those "breeders" or if they have to be called, who propose the purchase of a rare cat at a significantly lower price compared to the normal purchase price.

If you want to buy a purebred cat, always make sure they have the pedigree. In fact, it is a very important and mandatory document, which certifies the genealogy of the cat and its specific belonging to a specific breed. Here in Italy it is issued only by the Italian feline associations. On the pedigree you will find:

  • name of the cat
  • sex
  • date of birth
  • coat color
  • registration number
  • number of microchips
  • name of the breeder
  • name of the farm from which it comes
  • name with characteristics of the cat's mother and father
  • the entire lineage of the cat, as long as there is clear and certain documentation

The cat's pedigree is therefore a real identity card, created in order to receive any nasty surprises after the purchase of the purebred feline.

In conclusion, we hope that these found Bengal cats have all the care they need and we hope that the phenomenon of illegal trafficking can be increasingly opposed, for the sake of the animals themselves.
