Have you ever called your cat by name and simply ignored you in response?

By now, we cat owners have made a joke of it. Our cat friends, whether out of laziness or just for fun, most of the time ignore our calls.

But will it be because they don't recognize their own name?

Wrong!. A group of researchers from the University of Tokyo, led by Professor Atsuko Saito, found that cats recognize their name when they hear it. That is, they are able to recognize their own name between very similar words pronounced one after the other.

This study was conducted on 78 cats. A list of names consisting of four words similar to his was read to him. Their name was pronounced as fifth.

Hearing familiar sounds, the cats remained at attention, even if the concentration between the first and the fourth decreased and then got up again when reading the more known term.

It is important to say that of these 78 cats, some were owned by families, while others were guests of the so-called Cat Cafè. That is, guests of relaxing, warm and welcoming environments where customers can pamper them for an hour or more.

And it is precisely here that we find the most interesting data. These animals, compared to those who live in the house, prick their ears even when the names of other cats are spoken but are less receptive towards their own.

This is because living in a very stimulating environment where reminders, rewards and punishments are common, it is enough to invoke one of the many titles to have everyone's attention. So, dispelling all taboos, cats understand their name and if they don't look at us it's because they don't want to be disturbed or they don't want to hear what we want to tell them.
