Mario, is the first cat to have an epicardial pacemaker implanted. Unfortunately he suffered from heart failure. A syndrome in which there are serious dysfunctions that cause a series of problems in the cardiovascular system, which is no longer able to supply enough blood to the animal's body.

Symptoms appear following a thickening of the heart walls (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy), but it can also be caused by thyroid disease, hypertension (high blood pressure) or congenital birth defects. The person who performed this miracle was Dr. Raffaele Amalfitano, veterinary surgeon at the Salus clinic in via Merliani al Vomero, Naples.
He explained that he had a very low heart rate, that is, twenty to thirty human beats, followed by severe hypertension.
The family of the beautiful cat was desperate, they did not want to lose their beloved animal. And so together with Dr. Amalfitano, they discussed at length a possible solution to save his life.
Doctor Amalfitano, a team of electrophysiologists and Mario's owners have decided to risk everything to save him; that is, they have decided to carry out an operation never done in Europe. Implant Mario with a small pacemaker, used for human children.

The application of the pacemaker required annuloplasty in order to use the catheter to cross the jugular vein.
The catheter was then inserted into the right ventricle, resulting in stabilizing the cat's heart.
But the real novelty of this intervention is that it was necessary to operate without stopping the heart, since it was not possible to use the machinery that replaces the heart muscle for the time necessary for the intervention.

The surgery was successful and now, thanks to the professionalism of the whole team and the courage of the family, Mario is back as the cat he was before.
