The kitten Sophie has suffered a considerable trauma. She was paralyzed following damage to her spinal cord caused by a broken rib. After having undergone surgery, now fortunately walks again. Like humans, even for cats, the loss of mobility is one of the most difficult physical traumas to deal with.
Sophie is a kitten who lives in Coney Island, New York. One day she was found by Kelley Peters of The Kitty Krusade, slumped and very sore.
She had sustained a vertebral fracture, and a broken rib had lodged in her spinal cord. As a result, the hind legs were paralyzed.
Despite the pain, the kitten allowed herself to be treated. She remained calm and did not spare even a little purr. Initially the situation seemed critical, but the doctors did not despair, on the contrary they left good hopes of recovery.
There was the possibility of an operation that could allow her to walk again. But the kitten Sophie first had to regain her strength with a treatment based on painkillers, antibiotics and steroids and had to follow a special diet.
When the day of the operation finally arrived, they were all anxiously awaiting. Sophie, however, surprised everyone because as soon as she woke up from anesthesia, the results were evident. In fact, the kitten immediately stretched her hind legs.
The recovery was long, because she had to undergo physiotherapy. Kelly Person said: "We did therapy every day, with exercises that re-learned how to walk, jump and move like any other cat."
It took six weeks before she started taking the first steps on her own. Ten weeks after the surgery, she was even able to run without any problems.
We have to thank the preparation of surgeons and the determination of very valid volunteers. It is thanks to them that Sophie walks again. Now he can live happily as he deserves.
