From the video published by Metropolitan city of Bologna it is clear that along the Bolognese Apennines, through photo-traps, a rare specimen of wild cat has been sighted.

Recently there was a news that jumped to the headlines and which has a cat as its protagonist! but, not the common domestic cat, but the " Felis Silvestris ", more commonly known as the wild cat.

In fact, this wild cat was spotted on the Bolognese Apennines. Rare if not unique, where evidence of previous sightings is very scarce. In fact, the most significant sightings are those that mostly affect the area central-southern Italy and also Sicily and Sardinia.

However, returning to the news, we must ask ourselves: how was it possible to spot this rare feline? well, some had been placed photo traps to find the presence of wolves in that stretch of the Apennines. When the images were examined by the local police of the metropolitan city of Bologna, they have noticed some particular frames which did not represent wolves, but rather an animal much more like a cat!

The frames have therefore been examined by some experts such as Prof. Mauro Delogu, Dr. Carmela Musto of the University Clinic of Ozzano and Dr. Edoardo Valleys of the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA). Finally, everyone agreed in recognizing that feline as “Felis Silvestris”.

It's about a discovery somewhat particular and unexpected and which will lead to further checks. For the moment, thanks to the frames, it was possible to see that the cat photographed has typical aspects of the wild one. In fact, it presents a gray coloring uniform on the upper torso and tail.

The lower part of the bust takes on a instead color more tending to cream, which gradually fades into White in the areas of the chin, throat, chest and inner thighs. There are two predominant and identifying characteristics: the dark streaks on the head, on the lap and along the hips and one dark streaked bandwhich starts from the shoulders and reaches the tail, which has a totally black tip!

We hope that these felines will be preserved in their natural habitat and protected from any risk of extinction.
