The cat runs into serious danger if it comes into contact with a poisonous snake. In Italy the most poisonous specimen par excellence is the viper. The timeliness of intervention after a bite is essential to avoid the death of the cat and save it.
We know that one of the predominant characteristics of the cat is the innate instinct of exploration. So it is not uncommon to find, in a cat used to leaving the house, the habit of slipping into more unthinkable places and unlikely. But beware of the arrival of summer! Those "unexplored" places that cats like so much and stimulate their curiosity, can turn out to be a danger to his health.
In particular we are talking about the danger that cats run if they encounter a poisonous snake. In Italy, excluding Sardinia, the poisonous snake par excellence is the viper. There are four types and the viper bite, if not treated promptly and with the right precautions, it can be lethal.
It must be said that the viper, like all reptiles, does not bite unless it is bothered. The viper bites in all those occasions in which it feels threatened or frightened by some intruder, animal or man.
Having said this, let's go into the specifics of the risks that cats can incur coming into contact with these reptiles, the symptoms and what we must do in case of a bite. First of all, let's start by saying that the vipers prefer the tall vegetation, where they can easily blend in or protected places such as the piles of wood or mainly stony soils.
These are places that can stimulate the curiosity of the cat and it is no coincidence that the points where the highest majority of bites by the viper are found are the paws and muzzle. This is because the cat, by sniffing, trying to give a paw or simply stepping on the animal, causes its reaction.
Symptoms of a snake bite
How do we know if our cat has been bitten by a poisonous snake like the viper? THE symptoms and the danger of the bite can also vary depending on the tonnage, how much poison was injected and also by which type of viper it was bitten, but mainly we find:
- Edema in the area where he was bitten
- Airway obstruction if the bite occurred near the throat
- Obvious pain that leads the cat to lick and moan
- Vomiting, diarrhea and general dejection of the cat
What to do to save the cat
If you are facing these symptoms or you have realized that your cat has been bitten by a snake, go to the vet immediately and notify him of your arrival so that he can prepare in time to deal with the situation. Of course, ask immediately what to do, to limit the circulation of poison in the body of the unfortunate cat.
Some good rules they are necessary to avoid the worst in the cat after the bite of a poisonous snake or even a viper. First of all you must try to keep him as calm as possible and therefore avoid making it move. This is precisely to prevent the poison from circulating too quickly. Another aspect not to be underestimated is that of do not use tourniquets on the bite, as it could cause necrosis of the paw. Also avoid using alcohol-based disinfectants. Hydrogen peroxide allowed. The question of whether or not to use the ice in the affected area.
Having said that, we remind you that the timeliness it is the best weapon against a snake bite. Do not leave anything to chance and always contact your veterinarian, who will be able to give you the right tips for effective first aid.
Here is a nice story but also a little worrying: cat and snake they don't understand whether to become friends or not! The answer, of course, in the end, is no: how could two such different animals ever spend time together? Let's see how it went.
Did you know that there are breeds of cats that behave like dogs ? Well yes, some cats do things that are reminiscent of their beloved Fido. There are those who consider cats and dogs to be two separate worlds destined to never meet and, above all, those who prefer one or the other species.
There it smells like cat urine it is among the least pleasant smells we can deal with if we are struggling with a cat. It is a rather strong and recognizable smell, which we can distinctly smell inside the litter box, let alone outside the structure where our little fur ball usually goes about its business.
What if your cats weren't purely a coincidence but were always meant for you? Don't take me for crazy, now I'll explain. Living with our cats makes a little of them assimilate to us and vice versa, if we look at them they reflect a bit what we are and so do we.
The well-being of our four-legged friend also includes excursions and outdoor games. However, it is very important to ensure that they do not run risks with vegetation that is apparently friendly but which is not. The same goes for indoor furniture.
