If you have a sexually mature, unsterilized cat, be aware that indoor cats can also sneak away from time to time, especially when they go into heat. And only one of these escapades may be enough for it to reveal that she is pregnant shortly after. Some owners do not notice the signs of estrus (mainly behavioral and sometimes difficult to identify) nor those of pregnancy: so here are explained one by one typical symptoms and behaviors of a pregnant cat.

In the first 2 weeks from conception there will be few signs of an ongoing pregnancy, but you may notice that your cat has gained some weight.

TO 3 weeks, the nipples of the animal will become more rosy than the surrounding skin, they will swell and become more rigid. This is the first really easy sign to look at, and it's also a good way to tell when conception may have occurred. Some animals also suffer from morning sickness due to the hormonal imbalances currently taking place in their bodies. Vomiting, loss of appetite and lethargy are the consequences of this condition between 3 and 4 weeks.

About 3 and a half weeks your veterinarian will be able to do an ultrasound to the expectant mother cat to ascertain the presence of babies in the womb. He could also perform abdominal palpations for the same purpose, but this procedure should only be performed by an experienced specialist.

Around twenty-fourth day it will be possible to distinguish the heartbeat of the little ones. By this time, however, the cat's belly will have swollen enough to leave no doubt about her condition.

TO 4 weeks, that is, in the second half of gestation, the symptoms become more marked: the belly will continue to grow and the nipples to swell, becoming an even more vivid pink. The cat may start licking around the nipples to remove the hair, which will make them easier for the little ones to find. You may also begin to notice milk-like fluid leaking from your nipples.

This is where the most noticeable behavioral changes begin: between 4 and 5 weeks the cat may become more affectionate towards you, to the point of demanding your attention. At the same time, he may be less tolerant of other animals, even those he previously got along very well with.

Due to the swelling of the uterus and the pressure it exerts on the bladder, expect "accidents" outside the litter box, which could cause discomfort and restlessness in the cat.

As and when labor is approaching, this discomfort and this restlessness will increase: the cat may meow frequently and even insistently, and will wander around the house as if looking for something. She will also search for a secluded place to give birth, which you should provide for yourself. When you see her holing up in this place and repeatedly licking her vagina, it is a sign that the birth is about to begin.

In general, the animal is quite self-sufficient, but try to get everything you need to help your pregnant cat in this very delicate phase should there be any unforeseen events and your intervention becomes necessary. In particular, keep the vet number, to call for advice in case of problems, and the pet carrier of the cat, with whom you can possibly take her to the doctor as a matter of urgency.
