The Ocicat and the Bengal cat are often united because they both have an exotic and wild appearance … but also a nice temper! However, these are rather superficial similarities, as we will show in this article: here is an in-depth comparison between these two breeds. similar but different.

L' Ocicat it takes its name from the resident Ocelot cat between Texas and the more southern regions, up to Argentina. Yet the Ocicat is by no means a descendant of him: the original is in fact the result of an unsuccessful attempt to cross a Siamese cat with an Abyssinian by a breeder named Virginia Daly. What she mistook for an Abyssinian, however, was a stray with coppery eyes and gold-flecked fur. The result of the mating was initially called Tonga and then Ocicat at the behest of the breeder's daughter.
Ocicats are extremely dynamic and intelligent, and are often referred to as talkers because they are vocally very active. They are loyal, affectionate, and tend to bond with their owners so much that they don't want to be left on their own for too long.

Unlike Ocicat, the Bengal cat o Bengali really has wild origins. It was born from the mating between an Asian Leopard Cat (Felis bengalensis, from which it takes its name) and a common domestic tabby, experimented by dog breeder Jean Mill. However, it took several generations for the kittens to finally inherit the appearance and intelligence of the first and the meek temperament of the second: it was 1985 when Mills first communicated the result of her experiment.
The Bengali has an extremely charming appearance and a sweet and a little crazy but affectionate character, as well as incredible agility. He adores human beings and is very fond of them. He also loves climbing and will often find him nestled on shelves, lockers and even on the top of doors - any elevated place can become his favorite refuge.
The Bengal cat is also very curious and is interested in everything you do at home; he remains playful up to an older age and loves to play with water, he might even get into the shower with you if you let him into the bathroom! Sometimes he becomes a real troublemaker, but usually it is because he is bored and does not have enough toys with which to pass the time and stimulate his curiosity.

After this examination of the two races, we now come to a more direct comparison. As regards the size the Bengali is larger than the Ocicat, with a weight that is around 5-6 kg in males and 4-5 kg in females; Ocicats, on the other hand, weigh between 4 and 5, 5 kg in the case of males and between 3 and 4 in females.
A purely distinctive trait of the Bengal cat is a sort of curvature at the base of the neck, between the shoulders, while the Ocicats lack it. To an inexperienced observer there fur of the two breeds it may look the same but it is not: the Ocicats have a dense and shiny coat that lies very close to the body; the Bengal cat has soft, dense fur that leads many people to believe it is hypoallergenic, but the problem is much more complex than that. Contact a breeder and try to be in contact with a cat of the desired breed to understand if you are really allergic to it.
Ocicats also have a head longer, a more square muzzle and larger ears than the Bengali, which has a rounded head with lower ears and a rounded tip.

As for the coloring of the hair, among the most obvious differences is the presence of spots or "rosettes" which in the Bengal cat are more flattened or in any case of various shapes and two colors, the darker of which surrounds the other; in the Ocicat, on the other hand, they are generally rounded with darker tips in the center.
Furthermore, in Bengali the abdomen is lighter in color and especially spotted. The Ocicat's tail has a dark tip with lines on the sides, quite different from the broad stripes on the tail of the Bengali, similar to those of a tiger. The stripes on their paws are also reminiscent of tigers, while in the Ocicat they are usually spotted.
