Hot cat food: why and under what conditions

The relationship between humans and cats has definitely evolved over the course of history, and many cat breeds are now so domesticated that it is difficult to compare with the wilder ones. Yet there are some aspects in which their common origin emerges: this is the case with theirs Power supply, which despite having adapted to a more domestic lifestyle still has some peculiarities that should not be underestimated. In this article you will find out specifically if it is appropriate to give hot food to your cat, why and under what conditions.

In general, the answer is yes and the reason is soon said: all cats, even the most "spoiled", descend from predators that were used to surviving by hunting their prey on their own and eating immediately after killing them, when they were still hot. While domestic cats no longer need to hunt or kill animals, they still tend to find warm or warm food more palatable.

Furthermore, felines are attributed the (actually widespread) habit of hiding or burying leftover food once the meal is finished. It is an instinctive behavior linked to the need to cover the smell of the carcass in order not to attract potential predators towards oneself (and perhaps towards one's own young). Felines are not scavengers, so in no case it constitutes a reserve of food to be consumed at a later time since it is no longer fresh for them.

For this reason it is difficult for the cold food (obviously we are talking about wet food such as meat, fish or canned food leftovers) attract the cat's interest: low temperatures affect the smell and original taste of the food in question, making it more difficult for the cat to recognize it and find it inviting.

In addition to this it must be said that food stored in the refrigerator can absorb the smell of other foods, resulting actively unpleasant to our four-legged friend.

Therefore, if the cat is entitled to food that has been stored in the fridge, we recommend warming it up a bit before giving it to him. Obviously it is also good to avoid that the temperature rises too much, risking burning his mouth! If you don't want to risk it or don't have much time available you can still get it out well in advance so that it can be at room temperature when you pour it into the bowl.

If the room temperature is a good compromise for the feeding of adult cats, as regards the kittens not weaned to be fed with special milk (liquid or powder) it is much more important to avoid temperatures that are too low: for the first 3 weeks of life they are very sensitive to cold and consume lukewarm milk, in line with body temperature (about 38 °), it can help them a lot.
