L' American Bobtail is one of the most loyal and affectionate cats in the feline world; they are the ideal choice for families with children who know how to interact with them, because they are excellent company for every member of the family. It is therefore normal to wonder how long a cat of this breed will continue to be part of it, and what is therefore his life expectation. We will talk about it in depth in this article.

Unfortunately, no one is able to predict how many years each individual cat will be able to live, regardless of breed. But we can refer to the statistics on the average life of an American Bobtail, which goes from 13 to 15 years.

It is important that the owners of these animals are aware of them, so that they understand when it is appropriate to start giving their four-legged friends special attention because they are entering the most advanced stage of their life.

It should also be said at this point that such duration refers to cats who have led one healthy lifestyle in the' environment most suited to them. Even in the best conditions, however, anything can happen: some have crossed the age of 15, even reaching 20, while others have not been able to reach it for reasons beyond the love and care of their humans.

But let's see what are the factors that affect their life expectancy, and on which ones we are able to intervene to ensure not only their longevity but also their well-being:

• General level of health;
• Specific properties of the breed.

Since we are talking about a mixed breed that boasts a rather varied genetic heritage, the American Bobtail is among the healthiest cats ever and at the moment there are no known hereditary medical conditions related to its breed. However, there are some ailments to which it may be subject:

• There hip dysplasia it is a rather rare problem but still present in these animals, and causes abnormal development of the hip with consequent deterioration of the relative joint.
• If the Bobtail is completely devoid of a tail it is possible that it is suffering from a malformation at the vertebral column capable of greatly compromising his health.

The American Bobtail is a medium-large sized cat, with a robust and muscular build; the average weight is between 3 and 7 kg. It has a very slow growth rate and reaches maturity only after 2-3 years. Obesity is a very common problem for this breed and can be very harmful to its health. However, it is a condition that can be solved and above all prevented by following some precautions:

• Periodically monitor the weight of the animal;
• Ensure a balanced diet in terms of quantity and guaranteed energy needs;
• Choosing high quality food products for him;
• Get him to exercise through walks and games or by getting him a good scratching post tree that he can climb and exercise;
• Reserve enough space for him to move, run and jump;
• Vaccinate him and schedule regular vet checkups.
