With its dense curly coat, the Selkirk Rex he is often nicknamed "the sheep cat". Just like its cousins Cornish and Devon, the Selkirk has undergone a natural genetic mutation over time, but only in its case is the effect on its coat so visible. To be able to admire it at its best, here are the best ones Images that depict him.

The first cat with the characteristics now associated with the Selkirk Rex was born in 1987 from a litter of 6 kittens found in an animal shelter in Montana, United States.

The other kittens had the smooth coat of a normal domestic shorthair, but there was also a kitten with such conspicuously curly hair that it attracted the attention of a local breeder named Jeri Newman, who decided to adopt it.

Once grown, the cat (named Miss DePesto) was mated with a black Persian and gave birth to 6 kittens, of which 3 had curly hair like her. It was then possible to deduce that the gene responsible for the mutation was dominant, and not recessive as in the case of Devon and Cornish.

The new breed was called Selkirk, from the surname of Jeri Newman's stepfather. This is also a special feature, as it is rare that a person's name is given to a breed of cats.

To maintain a certain genetic variety and give them a more pleasant appearance, it was decided to mate these cats not only with Persians but also with Exotic, American Shorthair and British Shorthair.

Within the Rex "family", the Selkirk is undoubtedly the quietest: this trait is the result of the kinship with the Persian and the British Shorthair.

However, he is a much more active type than these two breeds, and he loves to play a lot. Many say that he has a strong entertainer disposition.

The Selkirk does not always like to stand on his human's legs and be stroked to the bitter end, but he is still a patient and affectionate cat who knows how to get along well with both people and other animals.

If there is something that he does not really like, it is being alone for too long. If you fail to give him enough attention during the day he will not hesitate to point it out, sometimes with some teasing but generally meowing.

The Selkirk Rex is perfect for families with children because they are docile and sociable, although it is important that they first learn to socialize with each other properly.

Then be careful to keep the litter box in excellent condition, because it is a type very attentive to hygiene and cleanliness.
