The British Longhair It has long been considered a simple variant of the Shorthair and it was a long time before it enjoyed full-fledged breed status. We learn to know it better by defining its physical appearance, in particular dimensions and weight.

As regards the size, this elegant longhair cat belongs to the medium-sized breeds just like its "cousin" Shorthair. Similarly to the Shorthair, moreover, it reaches a height of about 30-35 cm and a length ranging from 56 to 64 cm, excluding the tail which according to the breed standard must measure the equivalent of 2/3 of the body.

Let us now deal with the weightBritish Shorthair males tend to weigh between 5 and 6 kg, while females tend to be slightly smaller and stop at 4-5 kg in weight. In both cases, however, the build is robust and characterized by a broad chest, powerful shoulders and a short and muscular back.

But it is obviously the hair the most distinctive feature of this breed, as well as the one that (together with its character) best distinguishes it from the British Shorthair. It is semi-long, very dense and has a rather developed undercoat. The colors are many, even if the blue one is probably the most widespread and known for this breed. Solid, multicolored, tortie, brindle, silver and colorpoint are all recognized patterns in the breed standard. In general, it is difficult to find a specimen with a completely uniform coat and without traces of branding (which in the solid variants are among the breed defects), so the existing ones (especially if cream and red) are considered extremely valuable.
