The Norwegian cat of the forests or Norwegian forest cat is a magnificent domestic cat with a dense, semi-long coat with a water-repellent effect. But what if loses a lot of hair? Is everything normal or is there reason to worry? We talk about it in this article.
The Norwegian cat has a history long and partly mysterious, but we know that centuries ago it was housed in Viking ships to hunt the mice on board and only later became a pet.
Before this happened he lived in the wild in the forests of Norway, and it is logical to think that in the course of his evolution developed some of the physical characteristics it still has today to better protect itself from the harsh climate of that region.
Among these physical characteristics the most important is undoubtedly his coat, which has two layers of hair: one is covering, long and water-repellent and is heavier and oily than that of a Maine Coon, resulting even more bristly to the touch; then there is a woolly and insulating undercoat.
All this has the function not only of repairing the animal from wind, rain and snow but also of maintaining its body heat. Further protection it is then provided by tufts of hair in the ears and between the toes, which in the latter case guarantees a better grip on treacherous terrain together with the slightly webbed legs.
Anyone who has a Norwegian at home can however confirm that this cat looks different between summer and winter, as it is subject to considerable seasonal moult which deprives him of most of his hair in the summer months, leaving only the ruff, tail and ears conspicuously hairy. This is a completely normal process that helps the animal not to suffer too much from the heat.
But be careful: if your cat sheds too much hair, sheds it irregularly and / or has skin lesions in the affected areas, it could be alopecia, and in that case it is good to take him to the vet to investigate the causes and solve the problem immediately.
Long and dense hair, large size, sturdy build: these are the physical characteristics that stand out most when you are in front of a Norwegian forest cat . But in its appearance there is an even more distinctive trait that not everyone is aware of, and it is the webbed paws .
