More than a real town, it is actually a fraction of the municipality of Not me, in Piedmont, which rises on the shore of Lake Orta at an altitude of 420 meters. But above all there are the cats, as evidenced by the sign offering the welcome to tourists.
There history it begins on 10 October 1756. During the session of the Council of the Community, little Brolo asked for the separation, at the ecclesiastical level, from the Parish of San Biagio di Nonio and the permission to become an autonomous Parish: the citizens of Brolo promised that they would independently finance their church, Sant'Antonio d'Abate, and that they would pay all debts with Not me.
This request was met with mockery and dismissed with a joke: "When al vien parish Brol / al ratt metarà su al friol", that is to say "When Brolo becomes a parish, the mouse he will put on his cloak”.
However, Brolo did not give up, and on April 27, 1767 he obtained his victory: on that date the decree was signed that would finally allow the construction of the Parish of Sant’Antonio Abate.
However, some of the inhabitants must not have gone down with the mockery suffered previously because the next day, on the door of the house of the authorities of Nonio, a mouse dressed with a small coat.
Just like our four-legged favorites, in short, the inhabitants of what would become the land of cats they had hunted the mice. And if you want to listen to the rumors that Brolo decided to hire a certain number of cats to hunt mice and insects that infested the village, then the title is undoubtedly doubly deserved.
In August 2006, from the idea of some inhabitants, this little one was born monument, undoubtedly suitable for expressing the identity of Brolo. It can be admired in a flowerbed on the terrace on the side of the provincial road.
In addition, on the occasion of the release of a book dedicated to Brolo, the village was covered with floor tiles decorated a feline theme. As far as we know these tiles are still there, embellishing the streets and houses.
There is no denying it: real land of cats, Brolo proudly shouts his identity to the world! And we are sure that as such there is no shortage of cats in flesh and blood …
